Genèse

A la fin des années 80 la nouvelle génération du rap s'oriente vers des textes radicaux et une musique agressive. Posdnuos, Trugoy The Dove et Pace master Mase ont grandi à Brooklyn et dans le Bronx, en 1987 ils sont tout 3 lycéens à Long Island et forment un groupe de rap alternatif : De La Soul est né.

Ils enregistrent en 1988 une première maquette « Plug Tunin' », puis en 1989 avec l'aide du DJ producteur Prince Paul leur premier album : 3 Feet High And Rising dont la pochette représente les 3 musiciens dans un univers bigarré. Le style du trio est audacieux et tranche ouvertement avec le "gangsta rap" et ses codes musicaux. Les samples de De La Soul puisent dans des univers musicaux jusque là peu utilisés par le Hip Hop, ceux de la pop, du jazz, de la musique psychédélique et du folk. Les paroles abordent avec humour et fantaisie des thèmes éloignés de la rue et du ghetto, comme l'amour et la paix tout en étant revendicatives. Les tenues vestimentaires du trio ne respectent pas non plus les conventions du rap, les membres du groupe arborant des chemises à fleurs. Le groupe proclame le D.A.I.S.Y age, (ère de la marguerite) en référence à l'acronyme « DA Inner Sound, Y'all ». Ils intègrent rapidement la Zulu Nation. Aux côtés des Jungle Brothers, d'A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes ou encore Black Sheep, les De La Soul sont parmi les leaders du collectif de rappeurs Native Tongues qui revendique cette démarche musicale joyeuse et positive. Le succès est immense et leur notoriété devient rapidement internationale.

Le groupe Naughty By Nature a été fondé et est composé de Mc Treach, Vinnie et Dj Kay, tous originaires de East Orange, dans le New Jersey.

Les trois membres du groupe ont grandi ensemble et c'est pendant qu'ils firent leur classe au lycée qu'ils décidèrent de former le groupe à la fin des année 80.

Influencés par leur ?mentor? Queen Latifah, ils n'hésitent pas à utiliser un langage cru dans leur musiques qui parlent essentiellement de sexe, et du ghetto. Mais contrairement a d'autres rappeurs hardcores, Naughty By Nature n'hésite pas à utiliser des instrus ?funkies? et des tonalités soul.

Ils se firent découvrir en signant sur le label Tommy Boy en 1990 et en sortant le single O.P.P (Others People Pussy) en 1991. Ce single extrait de leur premier album du même nom, eu un succès énorme. C'est pourquoi il gagnèrent en 1991 le 'The Source Award' du meilleur groupe de l'année.

Ils sortirent ensuite en 1993 un second album :?19 Naughty III? dont est extrait le single ?Hip Hop Hooray? qui se classa dans les 10 meilleurs ventes des charts rap US.

Leur troisième album : ?Poverty Paradise?, sortit en 1995, eu lui aussi un énorme succès et gagna même le 'The Source Music Award' pour l'album de l'année.

Ces multi-succès leur permirent d'entreprendre des carrières dans de multiples domaines. Mc Treach joua le rôle principal du film Jason's Lyric, il apparut aussi dans le film Meteor Man.
C'est lui qui eu l'idée de lancé la marque de vêtements Naughty By Nature. Dj Kay Gee, quant à lui, signa un deal avec Motown Records pour la production de jeunes artistes tels que Zhane.
Leur collaboration conduit a un titre mytique : ?Hey Mr DJ?.

En 1999, le groupe décida de quitter Tommy Boy pour signer chez Arista Records.
Ils sortirent alors un premier album pour ce nouveau label, très tôt dans l'année 1999, nommé ?Nineteen Naughty Nine : Nature's Fury".

Cet album lui aussi d'une très grande qualité eu un gros succès. 10 ans dans le monde du rap, quatre albums dans les bacs, mais Naughty By Nature a gardé la même force de frappe.

On peut affirmer avec aisance que Naughty by Nature est un des groupes mythiques de la côte Est, au même titre que Run DMC ou encore Public Ennemy.

Au début de l'année 2002, soit presque trois après leur dernière réalisation Naughty by Nature nous revient avec un nouvel opus, distribué cette fois par TVT et intitulé : "IIcons".

Freship : Treach porte un tatouage a l' effigie de son ami Tuapc Shakur sur son avant bras gauche.
Ainsi, comme il le dit lui même ; lorsqu'il boira, 2pac boira avec lui et lorsqu'il fumera 2pac fumera avec lui aussi.
